WHAT IS SKIN PURGING?
Purging can occur when introducing a new skin care product with active ingredients that increases cellular turnover. Cellular turnover is the process of shedding dead skin cells and creating new ones. As new skin cells develop at a quicker rate, they push the dead cells and any impurities like dirt and bacteria to the surface of the skin. The active ingredients rejuvenate the skin from the inside out, causing the breakouts that would emerge over time, to surface much quicker. Contrary to a breakout, purging is an indication that your skin care is decongesting your skin and working the way it is supposed to.
SIGNS OF SKIN PURGING:
LOCATION:
Purging will typically occur in the areas you normally experience acneic breakouts.
DURATION:
Skin purging typically lasts 2-4 weeks but may last up to 8 weeks.
SYMPTOMS:
Examine your skin and determine if it is oily or dry. If the skin is dry, you are likely experiencing purging. If oily, the skin is most likely experiencing a normal acneic breakout.
INGREDIENTS:
Active, exfoliating ingredients that typically cause purging are -
Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): Glycolic Acid
Beta-Hydroxy Acids (BHAs): Salicylic Acid
Benzoyl Peroxide
Fruit Enzymes
Retinoids
Remember, purging signifies that the product is doing exactly what it is supposed to!
